Built through Collaboration

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

For our second featured piece, I felt it was incredibly necessary to showcase the many talented individuals who played a part in launching Onism Coffee Co. If we have learned anything throughout the creation of the company, we’ve learned that building something great requires the creative minds of many. Each one of us involved in this project brings our own unique life experiences, perspectives and opinions. However, we’re all solidified by great cups of coffee -- and more importantly, the values that Onism represents.

Logo & Bag Design

Gooey, both a friend and collaborator to us, is an anonymous LA-based artist who challenges societal norms by leading a fight towards change through his art. Gooey designed our logos and our Momentum bag -- balancing minimalist elements alongside extremely creative, vibrant and expressive designs. Through Gooey’s logo and bag designs, he showcased Onism’s commitment to being a modern company while continuously challenging the status quo.

Gooey’s passion for creating visually engaging, imaginative and compelling art is rooted in the belief that art can be a game changer for people, making positive impacts in their daily lives and therefore changing how we all coexist.

Coming from a filmmaking and photography background, Gooey understands the power of stories and how everyone has a unique story to tell. With the professional experience acquired working in the entertainment and advertising industry, Gooey’s approach to fine art and public art is unique. As a storyteller himself, translating concepts, abstract ideas, and ideas into a tangible reality is what Gooey tries to achieve with his artwork. Having collaborated with some of the biggest agencies, brands, studios and networks in the world has given him a 360 perspective of how to create and develop art that is meaningful and powerful for audiences all around the world.

Gooey’s art is inspired by many artists like Keith Haring, Miro, Roy Lichtenstein, Ai Wei Wei, De Kooning, Gabriel Orozco, Gottlieb, Gorky, Motherwell, Turrell Kaws and Shepard Fairey.

Gooey believes that art can change the world and make it a better place. Gooey serves as an inspiration to all of us, and we’re grateful for his collaboration with us.

Website Development & User Research

Braden Thuraisingham - Co-founder, UX Research & Product

Braden is currently a UX Researcher for a software company, a Northwestern student-athlete alumni, and just completed his Masters in Human Computer Interaction from UC Irvine (my alma mater!).

Under the leadership and supervision of Braden, Justin Banbury and Khristian Ramperstad were part of the user research and website design + development.

Justine Banbury is a rising senior at Northwestern University studying journalism, business and design. Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, she loves going to school in Chicago and being in a big city. When Justine isn’t in class, she’s typically exploring Chicago with her friends, trying new restaurants, and enjoying the city’s music scene. Post graduation, Justine wants to enter the design industry and work in UX research/design -- hopefully in the tech industry. She played a huge role in our website research and development.

My relationship with Braden stems all the way back to 2011. While Braden and I both went on our separate paths after school, we reconnected before Onism was even conceptualized. Both of us knew we wanted to create something meaningful, but we hadn’t figured out what yet. When this opportunity came to work together, it felt like an instantaneous fit -- he just got it.

As you navigate our website, we hope you pick up on the intentional design and user interaction features that the team spent countless hours working on. We could have chosen a pre-designed template and slapped our product photos on; but, that’s not who we are or what we’re about. Our philosophy in, both life and business, revolve around making intentional decisions when it comes to the things we’re most passionate about. Our website design is founded upon accessibility, convenience, trust -- and, well, creative freedom. Our website was intended to serve as a space that’s as diverse as all of our coffee drinkers -- providing the ease of hopping on, purchasing and exiting while providing enough depth for people to explore our carefully selected content, messaging and design. Braden and I will be co-writing a piece that dives into his user research and design thought process. (Stay tuned for that!)

Rayhaan Rasheed - Co-Founder, Data Science Guy

Rayhaan is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington DC. He holds a Masters in Data Science and is interested in how AI and machine learning can be used in the food and beverage industry. Additionally, Rayhaan works for a large consulting company as a Data Consultant,

Rayhaan’s deep interests within the coffee industry are focused on finding ways to better understand coffee drinkers through user interaction data. He believes that data can help us provide a better overall coffee experience for our community. As much as we’d like you to get to know us, we’d love to get to know you and how we can be of better service to you.

And, just a little side note, Rayhaan is my nephew (although he’s only months younger than me).

Sam Rahim - Founder & Roaster
